![]() ![]() While being free-to-play, a range of in-app purchases are available largely access to cosmetic updates to players’ characters, which are released in limited-editions over 12-week seasons. It sees up to 100 players competing individually or in teams to be the last one/ones standing, combining shooting and construction elements. ![]() The player-vs-player, free-to-play game, launched in September 2017 is available on iOS, Android, and Nintendo Switch as well as the aforementioned platforms, and can be played across platforms. It is the latter, however, which has been the real runaway success, becoming one of the most-played games on the planet. It is available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and macOS. A free-to-play version was anticipated in 2019, but Epic have since announced it will remain a ‘premium experience’. The former was released in a paid-for early access version in July 2017. At present, there are two games that fall under the Fortnite umbrella: a team-based survival shooter called Fortnite: Save the World and Fortnite: Battle Royale, which as the name suggests is a last-person-standing game. It is produced by Epic Games, and uses the company’s signature Unreal Engine. That may matter less due to the larger amount of revenue that Epic gives to developers and publishers, but Steam’s head start in growing a gigantic user base is going to be a hard advantage for anyone to fight for some time.Fortnite refers to a videogame series, set in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested world. Steam is still absolutely massive ValveĮpic’s message is that its store can sell games, but it’s hard to argue with Steam’s continued market dominance. Meanwhile, Steam remains absolutely massive, with 47 million daily active users and 90 million monthly active users, according to a blog post from January of this year. Still, the message is there: There are a lot of players on the Epic Games Store, and they like to buy games through the service. But Metro Exodus is also just one game, and without hard numbers it’s trickier to tell if this is anything close to an apples-to-apples comparison. The message Epic Games would like to get out is that you can make a whole lot of money on the Epic Games Store, even if many fans expressed their anger over the game’s exclusivity online. What do the Epic Game Store numbers mean? “The Epic Games Store will make many hundreds of millions of dollars for developers this year,” Allison said during the presentation. ![]() The higher sales are only part of the story, as Deep Silver will keep a much higher percentage of the money coming in from the release on the Epic Games Store compared to the revenue it would have made on Steam. While Metro Exodus runs on the developer's own 4A Engine, were it powered by Epic's Unreal Engine 4, the engine licensing fees would have come out of Epic’s 12 percent cut instead of being added on top of Steam’s 30 percent revenue share. The Epic Games Store takes 12 percent of the revenue from game sales, while Steam takes 30 percent of the revenue for the first $10 million in sales, after which Valve’s cut drops to 25 percent, and then down further to 20 percent after $50 million in sales. Not only are the sales larger, but Metro publisher Deep Silver will keep more of the revenue. This proves, according to Allison, that “it’s really about your game, not so much about the store. Metro Exodus has sold two and a half times more copies on the Epic Games Store than Metro Last Light sold in the same amount of time on Steam. But the real news comes from the launch of Metro Exodus, an Epic Games Store exclusive. Steve Allison, head of the Epic Games Store, shared some download and sales data during a presentation at the 2019 Game Developers Conference, noting that users downloaded the free games Subnautica and Slime Rancher 4.5 million times in two weeks. The Epic Games Store is off to a promising start. ![]()
